Diabetes Queensland

Know the Score on type 2 diabetes

Diabetes Queensland is thrilled to be partnering with Bicycle Queensland and the Heart Foundation for the Santos GLNG Brisbane to Gold Coast Cycle Challenge.

As a not-for-profit charity, Diabetes Queensland depends on fundraising and philanthropic support to deliver on-the-ground services that help people with diabetes, their families and communities.

Although type 1 diabetes cannot be prevented, type 2 diabetes can be avoided or delayed through healthy eating, maintaining a healthy weight and regular physical activity.

If type 2 diabetes continues to rise at current rates, up to 3 million Australians over the age of 25 years will have diabetes by the year 2025 – driven by rising obesity, the ageing population, dietary changes, and sedentary lifestyles*.

Funds raised from this year’s event will support our new Know the Score community speakers program, which aims to raise the awareness about the risk factors of type 2 diabetes and how it can be prevented.

*The 2012 Diabetes Australia report Diabetes: The silent pandemic and its impact on Australia says obesity is a major contributor to type 2 diabetes, with estimates showing that eliminating obesity from the population can potentially reduce the incidence of type 2 diabetes by over 40 per cent.

Heart Foundation

Heart disease is the biggest killer of Australians with one person in Australia dying from it every twelve minutes. Many risk factors are preventable and being active every day is one way to beat the odds. Whether it’s riding a bike to work, going for a family weekend cycle or being part of this year’s Santos GLNG Brisbane to Gold Coast Cycle Challenge, we can all make positive changes to be more active.

The Heart Foundation is strongly focused on increasing people’s opportunities to be more active by working with government and industry to make it easier for us to cycle, walk and travel by public transport every day.

As a passionate advocate of active living, Bicycle Queensland does a wonderful job to encourage more of us to live healthier and active lives.

We are grateful to be selected once again as beneficiary partner for this year’s event. This ongoing commitment allows us to continue important and highly effective cardiovascular research that may go unfunded otherwise.
